Weyerhaeuser Sells 81,000 Acres of Arkansas Timberland, Funds New Wood Plant
Weyerhaeuser divested 81,000 acres of Arkansas timberland for $146 million, concurrently investing $147 million in a new engineered wood products facility near Monticello. This plant will produce TimberStrand from southern yellow pine.

Arkansas Timberland Divestment
Weyerhaeuser, a significant private timberland owner, has agreed to sell 81,000 acres of its Arkansas timberland for $146 million. This transaction marks the company's third timberland sale in a US state this year. The company classified the Arkansas acreage as "non-core" to its operations.
Earlier this year, Weyerhaeuser completed timberland sales in Virginia and Oregon, which generated $129 million in pretax gains. The sale of the Arkansas property is anticipated to conclude before the end of 2026, subject to standard closing conditions.
Investment in Engineered Wood Production
Alongside its divestments, Weyerhaeuser is investing $147 million into a new engineered wood products plant located near Monticello, Arkansas. This facility is designed to manufacture TimberStrand, an oriented strand lumber (OSL) product, primarily utilizing southern yellow pine.
This investment reflects Weyerhaeuser's strategy to optimize its US timberland portfolio and enhance returns from its extensive holdings, which encompass over 10 million acres across the United States.
Broader Strategic Initiatives and Financials
The company's strategic moves extend beyond Arkansas. Weyerhaeuser is commencing construction on its first biocarbon plant in McComb, Mississippi, and is actively identifying additional sites for future expansion. Its forest carbon program is also seeing increased activity, with 340,000 carbon credits sold during the first nine months of this year.
Financially, Weyerhaeuser reported adjusted EBITDA from its wood products division at $91 million for the third quarter, down from $129 million in the second quarter. Overall net earnings for the company decreased to $61 million from $80 million a year prior, on net sales of $1.9 billion.
Implications for Asia's Wood Product Sourcing
For procurement teams and specifiers in Asia, Weyerhaeuser's dual strategy of timberland optimization and engineered wood investment could influence global supply dynamics. The increased production of TimberStrand from southern yellow pine in the US market may affect the availability and pricing of similar structural wood products, including those sourced from other regions.
While direct impacts on Asian supply chains are not immediately detailed, a major US producer's focus on higher-value engineered wood products could shift global trade patterns, potentially altering the competitive landscape for Asian manufacturers and importers seeking structural timber alternatives in 2027 and beyond. Buyers should monitor global engineered wood product pricing and availability.
