New Border Facility Opens in November 2026

Architecture studio Aedas has completed the New Huanggang Port Development, a nine-storey immigration and transport hub situated at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border. The facility officially opened earlier this month, in November 2026, on the banks of the Shenzhen River. This new development replaces the original Huanggang Port, which began operations between the two cities in 1989.

Designed to function as a large-scale integrated hub, the structure combines essential border control services with extensive transport networks, offering 25,000 square meters of public space for travelers and visitors.

Pebble-Inspired Form and Metal Fin Facade

The architectural design by Aedas features a tiered, round-edged building. Its rounded form draws inspiration from a pebble, reflecting its riverside location along the Shenzhen River. The exterior presents a flowing facade, distinguished by horizontal metal fins that wrap around the elevation.

These metal fins contribute to the building's fluid appearance, creating a visually cohesive and dynamic surface. This material choice and design approach define the structure's identity as a modern gateway between the two major economic centers.

Integrated Hub for Cross-Border Movement

The New Huanggang Port Development is engineered to streamline cross-border movement, serving as a critical point for both immigration processing and regional transportation. Its comprehensive layout integrates various functions within a single, multi-level facility.

Beyond its primary role in border control, the hub's design emphasizes public accessibility and user experience, allocating significant areas for public use. This strategic development aims to enhance connectivity and efficiency for the millions of people who traverse the Shenzhen-Hong Kong boundary annually.

Implications for Facade Material Procurement

The completion of the New Huanggang Port highlights the demand for specialized facade systems in large-scale public infrastructure projects across Asia. Specifiers and procurement teams involved in similar gateway or transport hub developments should note the use of horizontal metal fins as a key design element for achieving a fluid architectural aesthetic.

This project suggests a continued market for high-performance metal cladding and bespoke facade solutions capable of both structural integrity and complex visual effects.

Suppliers of aluminum or steel fin systems, along with their associated mounting hardware and finishes, may find opportunities in upcoming regional projects requiring durable and visually distinctive external envelopes.
