Shanghai Science Tower: NBBJ Completes 127,000 m² Mixed-Use
The Shanghai Science and Technology Investment Tower, designed by NBBJ, features office, retail, and hotel spaces in Zhangjiang Science City, China, integrating products from Boweite, Dorma, and PPG.

Shanghai Science Tower Opens in Zhangjiang
The Shanghai Science and Technology Investment Tower, a 127,000 square meter mixed-use development, was completed in Shanghai, China, in 2024. Situated in the core business district of Zhangjiang Science City, the project integrates office, retail, and hotel functions.
The client for this significant development was Shanghai Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone Development Co., Ltd. The tower's design aims to attract technology companies, with a specific focus on artificial intelligence firms, and to serve as a driving force for scientific research and innovation platforms within the area.
Design and Consulting Expertise
NBBJ served as the architects for the Shanghai Science and Technology Investment Tower, with Yanko Apostolov leading the design. The project’s local design institute was East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd. (ECADI). Landscape architecture was a collaborative effort between NBBJ and SWA.
Specialist consultants included UnoLai Lighting for lighting design and ALT Cladding for façade consultation, ensuring specific technical requirements were met across the structure.
Material and Construction Partnerships
Construction of the tower involved several specialized partners. Shanghai Construction Group acted as the general contractor. Façade construction was split, with Shanghai Full Arts Curtain Wall Engineering Co., Ltd. handling the office sections, while Jangho Curtain Wall Engineering Co., Ltd. managed the hotel and retail façades.
Curtain wall mockups were provided by Shanghai Meite Curtain Wall System Co., Ltd. Key manufacturers whose products were utilized in the project include Boweite, Dorma, and PPG, contributing to various elements of the 127,000 square meter structure.
Implications for Asia's Building Sector
This project demonstrates the ongoing demand for specialized building materials and FF&E in large-scale mixed-use developments across Asia, particularly those targeting the technology sector.
Specifiers and procurement teams involved in similar innovation hubs or commercial projects in cities like Singapore, Shenzhen, or Bangalore should note the integration of diverse material suppliers and façade specialists.
The specific involvement of Boweite, Dorma, and PPG, alongside multiple curtain wall engineering firms, highlights the complex supply chains and expertise required for projects of this scale and functional diversity. Buyers should seek detailed specifications and supplier references for each component to ensure compatibility with project demands.
