Chinese Delegation Explores BC Wood Value Chain

Over 20 Chinese industry representatives, including major importers, distributors, designers, construction companies, and trading firms, visited British Columbia, Canada, from 10–12 September 2026. This delegation, described as one of the largest from China in recent years, participated in a program focused on the province's wood value chain.

Before attending the Global Buyers Mission (GBM), the group toured forest nurseries, sawmills, and active timber construction projects across British Columbia. These site visits aimed to provide firsthand insight into the region's forest management practices, wood processing capabilities, and the application of wood in modern construction. The program allowed participants to understand the journey of British Columbia wood from its origin to its end use.

Global Buyers Mission Connects Suppliers and Buyers

The Global Buyers Mission (GBM), an annual trade show dedicated to value-added wood products, was hosted by BC Wood in Whistler, British Columbia, during the same period. Supported by international market groups such as Canada Wood, the event serves as a key networking platform for Canadian wood product suppliers and international buyers.

The Chinese delegation engaged with various British Columbia suppliers during the GBM, exploring potential business opportunities and discussing product offerings. An industry reception held prior to the main event also facilitated initial discussions between the Chinese buyers and Canadian suppliers regarding market requirements and areas for cooperation.

Direct Engagement for Product Specification

The comprehensive program, which combined site visits with direct supplier meetings, aimed to give Chinese industry leaders a clear understanding of British Columbia's wood products.

By observing the entire wood value chain—from forest to manufacturing and construction application—designers and construction companies within the delegation gained context for specifying wood products in future projects.

This direct engagement allows for more informed decisions on material selection and usage, aligning product specifications with the observed characteristics and processing standards of British Columbia wood. The delegation's broad composition reflects a strategic effort to influence wood product use in China.

Implications for Asia's Timber Procurement

For procurement teams, architects, and designers in Asia, the direct engagement between Chinese industry representatives and British Columbia wood suppliers streamlines the process of sourcing and specifying wood products. This interaction provides a direct channel for understanding the origin, processing, and application of Canadian value-added wood.

Asian buyers, particularly those involved in large-scale construction or interior fit-out projects, can now approach BC Wood suppliers with specific requirements, confident in the material's provenance and performance characteristics.

This direct knowledge mitigates sourcing risks and supports the specification of timber for projects across the region, especially as demand for sustainable and certified wood products grows in Asian markets.
