Wutopia Lab completes aluminium-clad Whale Gate entrance for Jinsha Golden Island complex

Shanghai-based Wutopia Lab designed the 242-square-meter Whale Gate, an entrance structure for Jinsha Group’s Jinsha Golden Island residential complex in Shangqiu, Henan province. The project uses custom-fabricated aluminum honeycomb composite panels and a steel frame to create its biomorphic form.

Whale Gate entrance structure completed in Henan

Wutopia Lab, a Shanghai-based architecture firm, designed the Whale Gate, a 242-square-meter entrance structure for the Jinsha Golden Island residential complex in Shangqiu, Henan province. The structure serves as the main entry point to the development, which Jinsha Group is building.

The design draws inspiration from maritime folklore and ancient Chinese concepts of mythical islands, creating a threshold that references a simplified architectural figure of a whale.

The complex itself features multiple residential buildings arranged as “floating islands” among green spaces, plantings, and man-made water features, an arrangement that influenced the gate’s design concept.

Complex geometry achieved with custom steel and aluminum panels

The approximately 60-tonne Whale Gate features a six-layer structural system. This system includes a steel frame, connection rods, an aluminum substructure, waterproof layers, fin-shaped profiles, and double-curved aluminum honeycomb composite panels.

Wutopia Lab specified the aluminum honeycomb composite panels for their durability, lightweight performance, and ability to form complex curved surfaces. The structure's twisted and irregular geometry required custom fabrication for both its steel and aluminum components to accommodate varying curvatures and torsions.

Steel columns were segmented into 7 to 15 pieces, and nearly 10,000 three-dimensional coordinate points guided construction to achieve millimeter-level precision. A total of 1,170 uniquely shaped aluminum panels provide visual continuity across the complex form.

Exterior finishes and resident-only viewing platform

The exterior aluminum shell of Whale Gate is finished in a deep cobalt blue, contrasting with its surroundings. The structure's underbelly, where residents and visitors enter the complex, is finished in a metallic gold. Vertical openings, described as the whale’s “eyes,” shelter the walkway paved in smooth stones.

A staircase carved into the whale’s back, also in metallic gold, ascends to a viewing platform. This elevated terrace is accessible only to residents and includes a shade canopy made from white-painted aluminum.

The canopy’s slender stem and radial circular awning evoke a whale’s blowhole and water vapor plume, offering views over the still-under-construction compound’s landscaping and water elements.

This project demonstrates the application of custom fabrication techniques for large-scale, biomorphic architectural forms in residential developments across Asia.
