Spherical Retreat Lands in Hokkaido

Japanese hospitality company NOT A HOTEL has partnered with Pokémon Sleep to create a unique, spherical accommodation structure in Hokkaido, Japan. This "Poké Ball-Themed Hotel" translates the iconic red-and-white sphere from the gaming universe into an inhabitable space designed for rest.

The structure is set within Hokkaido's natural landscape, offering a distinctive architectural presence. Unlike conventional hotel properties, stays at this retreat are offered through a limited campaign, providing select participants an opportunity to experience the one-off design.

Compact Interior Design for Two Guests

The interior of the spherical retreat is compact and focuses on comfort, featuring a wide circular bed designed to accommodate up to two guests. A curved window opens the sleeping area to the surrounding landscape, while a circular monitor positioned above the bed displays Pokémon imagery.

The design integrates architecture and technology to create an environment centered on calm and sleep, extending the concept of the Pokémon Sleep mobile game, which tracks rest and rewards users for healthy sleeping habits.

NOT A HOTEL's Distinctive Hospitality Model

NOT A HOTEL, founded in Japan in 2020, operates on a model that combines design-led architecture with digital technology and controlled stays. The company develops a network of residences conceived by architects and creators, allowing for private ownership alongside hotel services and shared access across its properties.

This Poké Ball-themed project aligns with the company's broader strategy of transforming instantly recognizable images into fully operational retreats, showcasing an appetite for architecture as an experience rather than just a lodging.

Action for Themed Hospitality Projects in Asia

Architects and procurement teams across Asia involved in themed hospitality projects should seek out the specific design and construction details for the spherical structure and its integrated FF&E, which NOT A HOTEL stated would be revealed on 15 September 2026.

Understanding the material specifications for the red-and-white exterior shell and the custom circular bed for two guests will provide concrete insights into integrating intellectual property into architectural forms and bespoke interiors for future projects targeting experiential stays.
