XPRIZE Awards US$3.55 Million for Wildfire Detection Technology
The US$11 million XPRIZE Wildfire Competition, active since 2023, recently recognized advancements in space-based detection and autonomous ground response to protect natural resources.

Global Competition for Wildfire Solutions
The XPRIZE Wildfire Competition, a global initiative launched in 2023 with US$11 million in funding, has concluded its awards phase, distributing US$3.55 million to teams developing advanced technologies for wildfire management.
The competition aimed to transform how wildfires are detected and suppressed, fostering innovations that allow human populations and beneficial natural fires to coexist safely.
As wildfire frequency and intensity increase worldwide, the program incentivized technological breakthroughs to protect critical natural resources, including forests that supply timber for construction and other industries. The competition featured two distinct tracks: Space-Based Wildfire Detection & Intelligence and Autonomous Wildfire Response.
Advances in Space-Based Detection
For the Space-Based Wildfire Detection & Intelligence track, XPRIZE awarded US$1.05 million across five participating teams. This track challenged innovators to leverage space-based Earth Observation data, combined with artificial intelligence and machine learning, to identify, characterize, and report wildfires more rapidly and accurately across vast geographical areas.
Judges noted significant progress in integrating multi-sensor systems, refining detection methodologies, improving commercial readiness, enhancing operational capabilities, and developing novel algorithms. The results from this track also helped pinpoint specific technical gaps that need to be addressed to achieve reliable, real-time wildfire detection from space.
Autonomous Response Capabilities Tested
The Autonomous Wildfire Response track saw competitors deploy their solutions in the Alaskan wilderness during June 2026. Teams were tasked with autonomously detecting and fully suppressing a high-risk fire within 10 minutes of ignition, all within a challenging 1,000 km² terrain, without disturbing nearby decoy fires.
The XPRIZE Wildfire Judging Panel granted US$2.5 million to three finalist teams for their distinct breakthroughs across the entire autonomous wildfire response cycle. These innovations address the critical need for rapid, automated intervention to control fires before they escalate.
Implications for Asia's Timber Supply
Improved wildfire detection and autonomous suppression technologies, as advanced by the XPRIZE competition, hold direct implications for the stability of global timber supplies, including those reaching Asian markets.
Forests across Southeast Asia, Australia, and North America—key sources for plywood, lumber, and other wood-based building materials and FF&E used in Asian projects—are vulnerable to destructive wildfires.
Faster detection and response can significantly reduce the loss of these vital resources, potentially leading to more consistent supply chains and predictable pricing for timber products.
Procurement teams and specifiers in Asia should monitor the commercialization of these technologies, as their widespread adoption could mitigate future supply disruptions and resource scarcity in the timber sector.
