Victoria's New Engineered Wood Hub

The Precinct, an engineered wood hub planned for Portland, Victoria, has secured a proposed investment exceeding $200 million for its initial stage. This project is designed to convert Victorian timber plantations into building materials, including laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and glue-laminated timber (glulam).

Tim Woods, who has led the initiative since its inception, will now serve as its first chief executive. At a recent investor symposium in Melbourne, the hub confirmed Timberlink Australia as its newest industry partner, joining existing collaborators Australian Bluegum Plantations, OneFortyOne, Finland’s Raute, and WTIBeam.

Boosting Domestic Supply and Capacity

Upon full development and operating on a single shift, The Precinct is projected to produce structural components sufficient for 20,000 homes each year. This initiative seeks to address a notable gap in Australia's engineered wood supply.

Currently, Australian production covers only 26.5 percent of local demand for LVL and glulam, with annual imports of LVL having increased for 30 consecutive months. Victorian Agriculture Minister Michaela Settle stated that the project presents an "exciting opportunity" to extract greater value from locally grown timber and attract new investment to regional areas.

Call for Policy Alignment

Timber Towns Victoria (TTV), the peak body representing the state's timber communities, has advocated for strong government and industry collaboration to optimize the value derived from plantation wood. In its 2026 Government Brief, TTV urged governments to synchronize policies across forestry, housing, manufacturing, and regional development sectors.

Karen Stephens, TTV President and Mayor of Glenelg Shire, where the hub is situated, welcomed the significant interest in the project, noting that over 120 investors, industry leaders, and government representatives attended the recent investor symposium. The project is delivered by IndustryEdge, with funding support from Australian Forest and Wood Innovations (AFWI).

Implications for Asia-Pacific Sourcing

The development of The Precinct in Victoria could lead to shifts in sourcing patterns for engineered wood products across the Asia-Pacific region. As Australia aims to decrease its reliance on imports, which currently fulfill 73.5 percent of its LVL and glulam demand, Asian suppliers may encounter increased competition within the Australian market.

Projects and developers in Australia that presently procure engineered wood components from Asian manufacturers might find new domestic supply options. Asian manufacturers of LVL and glulam may need to assess these market shifts and explore diversification strategies as Australia's domestic production capacity expands.
