HP Commits US$1 Million to Forest Conservation

This year, technology company HP is providing US$1,000,000 to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to support forest conservation efforts. The contribution is part of the 'Together We Grow' campaign, an initiative designed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting global forests.

HP acknowledges the critical link between forests and the printing industry, recognizing that forests supply the essential resources transformed into tools for communication and creativity.

Sourcing Requirements for Paper and Packaging

HP's commitment to forest protection extends to its operational sourcing policies. The company requires that all HP-brand paper and paper-based packaging used for its home and office printers, supplies, personal computers, and displays utilize recycled or sustainably certified fiber.

HP specifically states a preference for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, aiming to ensure its products support responsible forest management practices across the supply chain.

Global Collaboration with WWF

The financial contribution and sourcing mandates are part of a broader global partnership between HP and WWF. This collaboration focuses on enhancing the sustainability of production forests, safeguarding wild natural areas, and reforesting degraded regions. HP is one of the early participants in WWF's 'Forests Forward' corporate engagement program.

Their joint efforts span several ecologically significant and threatened forest areas, including Brazil's Atlantic Forest, Peru's Madre de Dios in the Amazon, eastern Australia, key forest provinces in eastern and southern China, Vietnam's Central Annamites, and Mexico's Selva Maya on the Yucatán Peninsula.

Implications for Asian Suppliers

Asian manufacturers supplying paper or paper-based packaging to HP, or aspiring to, should note the company's clear preference for FSC certification and recycled content.

With specific project work underway in eastern and southern China and Vietnam's Central Annamites, suppliers in these regions are particularly encouraged to ensure their sourcing and production align with these sustainable forestry standards.

This commitment signals a continued demand for verifiable sustainable materials in global supply chains, affecting procurement decisions for building materials and FF&E components that rely on paper and timber products.
