Kobe Ceramic Studio Built with Rotated Timber Structure

The Tsukumo Kiln ceramic studio, located in Kobe, Japan, measures 80.32 square meters. Designed by Dept. + OAAA, the building serves as a production space for ceramics. Its structural system uses three timber portal frames, each rotated 60 degrees from the next.

This arrangement establishes an equilateral triangular footprint and creates a structure without a defined front or back. The design prioritizes an open interior suitable for ceramic work. Steel tension rods are integrated into the system to support and lift the timber beams, which reduces the need for internal columns and keeps the central workspace unobstructed.

The visible connection between the timber frames and steel tension members shows the structural forces at play within the studio.

Translucent FRP Panels Form Continuous Exterior Envelope

Dept. + OAAA enclosed the studio with folded FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) panels. These panels follow the geometry of the roof, integrating the roof and walls into a single, continuous envelope. The FRP panels were joined on site. Their translucent quality means the building’s appearance changes with daylight, weather conditions, time of day, and viewing angle.

The construction process considered geometry, structural logic, material behavior, fabrication, and on-site assembly as a unified architectural system. The distinct characteristics of the timber framing, steel tension members, and site-assembled FRP skin remain visible while operating together as a cohesive structure. The triangular layout inside creates various connections to the surrounding landscape.
